Project Plan
Location: Oxfordshire

A draft plan has been formulated and circulated around the group. The most important part of the plan at this stage is the preparation of guidance notes for contributors. This will set the tone and pattern for the whole project. The draft form of the notes is given below.

Guidance notes for authors

The aim of the project is to uncover the story of Blewburton Hill. All aspects of the story, from the last ice age until the present day, are of interest. The central product of the work will be a small book. It will be a book to catch the interest of ordinary people. The information in it must be correct but not over-scientific in its presentation or vocabulary. The focus is to be on the Hill but it must be seen in context. For example, a word picture of the Iron Age in Britain into which the people of the hill and its artefacts are fitted is more appropriate than a careful analysis of the finds on the hill and the inferences that can be drawn from them. A list of identified subject headings is shown below but further ideas will be welcomed. If you feel that the list is incomplete or the headings are inappropriate please suggest improvements to the editors for discussion.

The book is to be around 100 pages long in a comfortably sized font, in a pleasing format with a mixture of line drawings, photographs, artwork and paintings. The aim is to make it a high quality product; a collector’s item in years to come. This demands an attractive, consistent style and the editors reserve the right make adjustments to this end. Early discussions on content and style will be welcomed. The best page size is thought to be 240mm by 170mm, which allows pictures to be included to good effect and is also economical for printing purposes.

As a starting point we intend to aim at a maximum chapter length of 2000 words. Brevity and impact are vital so it is hoped that most chapters will be much less than this and will not become too concerned with fine detail. A list of references should be included for readers who would like greater detail. Authors are encouraged to include high quality illustrations where appropriate. Funds are available to have these produced professionally. The project artist will study the contributions as they become available and, where appropriate, will generate impressions to illustrate the mood and character of the writing.

In addition to the book there will be an information board for the hill, an educational product, posters, and a project website. It is expected that all of these can be derived from the basic information gathered for the book. The website will track the progress of the project from the start.

To meet the project deadline, set by the Local Heritage Initiative (LHI), we must have the written contributions by the end of 2004 to allow time for editing, artwork, design and production. It would be very helpful to have a brief description of your intended article during September so that we can discuss it with you at an early stage.

Funds are available for necessary and approved expenses. Please discuss individual items with the project leader who is responsible for allocating the funds from the LHI grant.

Copyright:- It is important to note that both the LHI and the originators of any work produced in the project will have full rights to use the material for other purposes.
