The Trendles Project: Exploring Marcham's Past
Location: Oxfordshire
Trendles is a field on Manor Farm, Marcham, oxfordshire, that contains remarkable archaeology. Excavations since the 1930s have shown the presence of an Iron Age village (600BC to 1st century BC) which had a large Romano-British religious complex built over the top of it (started in the 2nd century AD and lasted until the 4th century AD). This project aims to get local people involved in the on-going excavations by Oxford University within Trendles and in understanding how archaeology works and what it can find out about the past.
We have a core of about 100 people from the Marcham Society and will also involve local schools. Other groups are encouraged to participate in a variety of ways from digging and pot-washing to visiting and be guided around.
The project will investigate the historical and cultural significance of the site and the area by holding 4 workshops and 5 lectures on archaeological excavation skills and historical research. These will take place over the winter of 2005/6.
The excavation will provide a 'peoples trench' giving the wider community an opportunity to have hands on experience, activities will also include finds washing and recording. This started in July 2005 and continues in July 2006.
We are also developing improved on-site interpretation and will distribute 3000 leaflets freely to visitors. Also, ready for next July when the excavation continues, we are producing 1,500 booklets for distribution and school education packs. A video diary will record the project and a mobile exhibition will display the project to members of the community who were unable to attend the site.
