Renovation Of Air Raid Shelter & Establishment Of Classroom Museum
Location: Surrey
A second world war air raid shelter is the focus for this exciting investigation by local school children. The school has applied for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to open up the shelter as open-air classroom and museum.
The focus of this aspect of the project is for local children to collect reminiscences of previous pupils and community members who used the shelter during the war.
The shelter still has wall art from the children preserved on the walls, adding a unique dimension to the project. The children will attend 4 workshops training them in oral history recording and use of the equipment and an exhibition, with the aid of a professional editor, video maker, web designer and museum advisor.
The information gathered will be used to develop 1300 education packs and out reach materials that will be used in at least 6 presentation and visits to other schools and community groups. The investigation into the air raid shelters will be developed and used to create a virtual tour accessible via the website, this will insure that all members of the community have access to there war heritage and the hither too hidden art work.
