The Diggers Heritage Project
Location: Surrey

The Diggers were a movement local to Elmbridge in Surrey, but the idea attained a national and even international significance. In the particularly turbulent years after the execution of Charles I, the Diggers attempted to re-establish their rights to farm commonland, a right that had been removed by the medieval feudal system.

Some of the original Diggers sites are located in and around the Borough of Elmbridge.

This project is raising awareness in the local community of the Diggers movement, originally led by Gerrard Winstanley. It is doing this by researching and authenticating connections with potential sites and by commissioning art works and interpretation boards to be placed in relevant locations.

The Elmbridge Diggers Heritage Group is made up of local people. In addition, a number of local schools are getting involved in the project.

The schools' involvement includes classes led by an artist who is teaching the children how to produce story boards which illustrate aspects of the Diggers work.
