The Landscape History of Mickleham Downs
Location: Surrey

This is an area of land on the North Downs, some 3x2 km, in Mickleham, Headley and Leatherhead parishes. The project was initiated by a local group following a Landscape Survey project undertaken by the Surrey Archaeological Society.

The area was once part of a prehistoric field system, and the central part contains a number of enigmatic mounds and barrows.

This project is carrying out survey and research work on this field system, but is also investigating some 18th - 20th century pleasure grounds attached to the Downs.

Some limited excavation work has already taken place to eliminate the possibility that the mounds were part of recent clearances. Such a discovery would have significant implications for the interpretation of the field systems.
