Archaeology @ Ambarrow
Location: West Berkshire

The project aims to investigate Ambarrow Court, now a Local Nature Reserve owned by Bracknell Forest Borough Council and previously the site of a Victorian Gothic Mansion; it was used in more recently by the MOD.

The Council have put forward this project to raise interest, awareness and enthusiasm for the archaeology and local history of the site amongst schools and local people.

It is intended to achieve this through the chance for some local schools to take part in an archaeological dig on the site as part of National Archaeology Week in 2007. There will be preparatory work in the schools prior to the dig which will include the chance for pupils to research as much of the history of the site as they can with the help of two educational experts.

This will include the chance to undertake some oral history work with ex-MOD employees who worked on the site.

The week’s dig will culminate in a public exhibition which will be open to the general public and will provide the opportunity for people to have a go at an archaeological dig for themselves. Pupils will receive a ‘keepsake’ diary of their time on the site. There will also be CD ROM available at libraries and schools.
