Leckhampstead Grove Pit & White Hill
Location: West Berkshire
Leckhampstead is registered common that once was used by drovers to hold sheep overnight on their way to the sheep fair in East Ilsley.
The group which is comprised of parishioners and local history society members are going to conduct research into the use of the land by investigating old maps produced by the abbots of Abingdon and Sandleford Abbey and parish records.
They will record memories from members of the community who remember the land being used by drovers before the 2nd world war. The group will restore the land to its former state, by clearance and laying 1 mile of hedgerows.
To ensure the quality of the project the group will have training in oral history recording, traditional hedge laying and land management. A professional local tree surgeon will assist with the clearance. The group will conduct 12 guided walks and produce 5000 leaflets.
The projects research will be interpreted through 4 information boards and 3 exhibitions in the locality. To ensure the sustainability of the project the group will write a management plan and produce a bio-diversity survey of the site.
