Clearing Calloways Lane
Location: West Sussex
The Elm trees, that originally lined Calloways Lane, had all suffered from disease. Every winter another one or two fell in the gales. The width of the lane had been dramatically reduced by encroaching undergrowth.
One of the main tasks for this project was to clear the dead trees and undergrowth to reveal Calloways Lane as it was one hundred years ago. The width of the lane was clearly defined by the surviving ditches.
Machine clearance was the only practical option for the 300 metres of dead trees and undergrowth. A large digger and driver were hired to carry out much of the heavy work.
It was amazing to see the full 5 metres width of Calloways Lane as it would have been seen by Edward Calloway in the mid 18th century.
At the southernmost end of Calloways Lane there is a small pond, (formerly a marl pit). This had become choked with brambles and other debris. Using the digger, it was easy to clear the pond.
We are planting a golden willow tree alongside this little pond to provide some shade.
