Memories Day, Sat. 15th Oct. 10.00am – 1.00pm at Fishbourne Club
Vaani Parekh’s eyecatching poster encouraged over 150 people to come and see the ten enlarged Archive photos of the Tutankhamun Carnival float, the Brownies, the cricket and football teams and many others. They read about Boys’ Garage, Driscoll’s Shop in Halfrey Road, the Jazz Club, the discovery of Fishbourne Roman Palace written by Mr A N Burgess (aged 104) who had charge of the crucial water main, and memories of Denis Gratwick, Charlie Lambourne, Doris Tidy and many others.
A lot of people stayed for the full three hours reading the press cuttings from yesteryear, browsing through Fishbourne School Year Books and children’s work from the 70s and 80s loaned by Mary Archer and poring over old maps. Many people brought in more memories, memorabilia and photos and I was delighted to receive more contributions for The Book there and then. People met old friends and compared notes and memories and it was sometimes hard to get from one end of the large room to the other for people hugging and greeting each other. It was especially good to see children and young people there, too.
