The Vanguard Way, running from Seahaven to London, is one of the least known long distance footpaths in South East England.
This project is the collaboration of three community projects which are situated at various points along the trail. The communities are New Addington in Surrey, Forest Row in East Sussex and Seaford/Newhaven in East Sussex.
The project group is the River Ocean Research Education Foundation, which is co-ordinating activities and providing expert advice and guidance. The groups helping the project primarily consist of junior schools, but also include senior citizen groups, Local Agenda 21 groups and others.
The groups are collecting and disseminating heritage information about the trail in each of their geographical areas. The junior schools are also collecting stories from parents and grandparents about the environs on either side of the Vanguard Way.
The project is increasing public awareness of the trail via the web and is producing websites as well as a leaflet and festival events.
The project eventually hopes to see increased use by walkers and tourists. It also wishes to see a new awareness of their local heritage in young people and the involved communities.
