Walberton Churchyard Heritage Project
Location: West Sussex
This project aims to raise awareness of the history of Walberton and to restore important heritage assets in the churchyard.
The scheme is headed by the Walberton Action Group, but will actively involve a range of local organisations including the Parochial Church Council, the local Primary School and the Local History Society. Over 60 volunteers from these organisations will be involved in a flora survey and management plan for the churchyard, and research into the history of the church (including names on gravestones).
Outputs from this part of the project will include a self-guided heritage trail around the church and churchyard which will incorporate a heritage guide/leaflet, and an education pack for schools.
An overarching theme of the project will be a film, entitled "Hidden Gems", which will chart the progress of the project and use actors in period costume - from the school and other sectors of the community - to explain and interpret various aspects of local heritage.
An integral part of the project will be restoration work in the churchyard. This will involve tree surgery to secure long-term retention of future trees, and repair work to gravestones that are either in dangerous condition and/or have particular significance to the history of the village.
