Radstock Museum Video Archive Project Final Report
Location: Bath and NE Somerset

The project had a surprise injection of funding from the Somerset District Miners Welfare Trust which made it possible for us to extend our objectives to include the production of a documentary film - “Somerset Mining Memories” which uses the new video archive as a resource. The video has been combined with photographs and film from the museum collection to create a 90 minute film.

In order to meet this new objective, the project completion date was extended to May 31st. On Saturday May 14th , the museum had a preview screening of the film and reception to which everyone who contributed to the project was invited. Over sixty people attended. The documentary film was very well received and the evening provided a wonderful occasion to celebrate the project’s success as well as to thank everyone for and the large contribution of their time and effort.

The Local Heritage Initiative involvement in this project has now come to an end, but the Radstock Museum’s work with the documentary film and the video archive continues. The film is in the process of being recorded onto video and dvd (see photo). The film will have a formal premiere screening at the Radstock Museum on September 17th. Already a number of local film clubs and historical societies have asked the museum for additional screenings for their members. This project has also fostered the development of a documentary film making group attached to the museum. They intend to continue on a voluntary basis to make use of the video archive to create other documentary films about the history of the Somerset coalfields area.
