Boundary Stones
Location: Cornwall

The post mediaeval and industrial patchwork of land ownership and mineral rights on Bodmin Moor were marked with boundary stones showing the name of the area and the owner.

The project aims to restore these stones and revive the memory of their purpose and the traditions associated with them.

The community will be involved in collating research, undertaken from both desk and field. They will also undertake practical work to clean and re-erect the stones, replacing any missing ones.

An exhibition will be held to display the findings of the research to test its veracity against local knowledge. The research and anecdotal stories will be published (as a document and a CD) and a website will be created which will link to the Parish Council website.

A local artist will also work with the 2 local schools to develop an interpretative arts project and the whole thing will culminate with a resurrection of the traditional ‘Beating of the Bounds’ event which hasn’t been done since the 1900’s.
