HMS Colossus - what the project has done
Location: Cornwall

Kevin Camidge has lived in Cornwall since 1987. As founder and secretary of CISMAS (the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Maritime Archaeology Society), he is both the co-ordinator and one of the skilled professionals working on this project.

Our first report is on our CISMAS website, and has been quite well received. I wrote the technical side of it, and one of our team members wrote a "Diving Diary" which gives a lay person's point of view.

Lots of people have helped with the project. In the Scillies, six or seven people have been involved, coming out on the water and helping, and a bigger group has taken an interest. In Penzance there are about a dozen people who have given time and helped with the work in the Scillies, but a much smaller core of people - only four or five - who've been truly active in the outputs like the museum display.

The project has provided a lot of training, both one-to-one from me and proper Nautical Archaeological Society training schemes. At first our people joined an existing course, but then we had enough people to get the trainers to come to us in Penzance. We've got 8 now on an introduction course and 14 going on to the Part 1 Certificate Course.

We wanted to write up our previous work on the ship, and her history, which is quite interesting. Our original plan was to publish a booklet this summer, to accompany the display, but it became clear this wasn't sensible because at best it could only have half of our findings in it, and we'd have to write another one for next year.

We've got a draft text, which three or four of the volunteers have worked on, handing it from one to the other and back again. They've had access to all the technical reports, and they've written their own pieces - so all it will need is sub-editing to give it a homogenous style. We hope the booklet will be published later this year.
