Liskeard Town Heritage Trails -Launch Day 25th March 2006
Location: Cornwall

Fog and squally rain unfortunately forced us to hold the ceremony in the Public Hall instead of on the Parade.
The arriving guests were welcomed by the Liskeard Silver Band, and the proceedings were opened by the Liskeard Town Crier, Frank Beer.
Tony Wood, Chairman of Stuart House Trust, and prime mover of the trails project, spoke of the 400 plus volunteer hours invested in it and thanked the many individuals and organisations involved.
These included Brian Hoskin for producing a unique picture map of the town showing individual buildings, Samantha Broughton and Karenza Broznan for designing the children's trails, Lianne Rowe for formatting the children's trails, the main map and display boards and George Vaughan Ellis R.I.B.A. for designing the finger posts and arranging for their manufacture and erection.
Tony also thanked Iain Rowe who created and compiled the DVD, combining his own photographs with archive photographs supplied by John Rapson -who also gives the commentary -and music from the Liskerrett Male Voice Choir.
He thanked Eileen Crouch who maintained the records and organised much of the training programme and photographic exhibitions, Dave Howard for his work with the LHI website, town clerk Brenda Furse, and Heather Medlen of Liskeard Museum.
Organisations and groups acknowledged for their assistance with the project were The Stuart House Heritage Committee, The Liskeard Old Cornwall Society, Liskeard Town Council, Caradon District Council, Liskeard Chamber of Commerce, the Liskeard and District Museum, Liskeard School and Community College, Liskeard Junior School, the Cornwall and Devon Railway Partnership, Rotary and the Round Table.
The Trails were then formally opened by General Sir Richard Trant KCB, DSC, DL., Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall.
This ceremony was followed by a superb buffet supplied by 'Tapenades' restaurant during which there was entertainment by the 'Java 5' close harmony a capella singing group, with John Batey , a Stuart House Committee member in its ranks.
Around the Hall were displays of the trail maps, an exhibition from the digital photography course and photographic competitions –put together by George Vaughan Ellis, while the trail DVD was being shown on a large screen by Iain Rowe.
Everyone was invited to pick up a map and take themselves around the trail. Stuart House and the Museum -both normally closed Saturday afternoons- stayed open late to cater for those inspired to do so.
To coincide with the Launch of the trail, three commemorative plaques were unveiled around town that day by the Mayor Sandra Preston;
One is on the ornamental fountain in the Parade which was presented to the town by the then Mayor, Michael Loam. This was in memory of his father who had been instrumental in the invention of the Man Engine -a revolutionary device for lifting men up and down mineshafts
Another is located near gates of the General Cemetery in Station Road and commemorates Thomas Lang, a local builder and timber merchant who built, at his own expense and largely with his own hands, a pavement from the town all the way to the railway station.
The third was placed conveniently on Barclays Bank in the Parade, and commemorates the 200th anniversary of local man, Lieutenant Lapenotiere, who was given the task of bringing back the news of the Battle of Trafalgar to England. For this he was presented with a silver spice sprinkler by King George III which was later donated to the town and now forms part of the town silver.
