Liskeard Heritage Trail, September 2005 status report

The splendid map of the town has been scanned into a computer image, and street names, building identifiers, finger post locations, etc. added to it. The map will take up most of one side of the A2 size finished Trail Map, while an illustrated script on the reverse gives details of the route to be taken and describes points of interest along the way.

A number local organisations and individuals have provided input for this script; several people made trial walks of the proposed trail and submitted suggestions for amending of the script, which has now been finalised. Quotations have been received for translating the script into a foreign language, and advice is being taken as to which languages to proceed with.

One walk was with a wheelchair-bound person which threw up several problems such as unnegotiable steps or sharp corners. These have been brought to the attention of Borough and Highway authorities who are looking to see what can be done; replacing steps with ramps, for example. We shall, in any case, be preparing a loose leaf addendum to the main walk script suggesting alternative routes to bypass remaining obstacles.

A slightly different version of the map will be used for the display boards, which will be a little larger than A1 size. Follwing examination of display boards in neighbouring towns, and with advice from manufacturers, a form of construction for these boards has now been decided upon -screen printed aluminium bonded to a heavey plywood base and laminated. These will be vandal resistant to some extent, and relatively cheap to replace.

The locations of finger posts has been decided, though some permissions need to be sought. The design of the finger posts, by retired architect George Vaughan Ellis R.I.B.A., has been finalised, as has their colour scheme -gold lettering on a black background. In some locations, the 'fingers' can be wall mounted, thus obviating the need for an expensive post.

The finger posts will have a cast iron base, steel pole and aluminium fingers. Quotations for the manufacture and supply of the finger posts have been received and are being assessed. Long term maintenance of the finger posts and display boards is being discussed with the Town Council.

The digital photo training programme has now been completed -the six sessions were attended by about ten people, some of whom having had no previous experience in digital photography. To consolidate the training, a photo competition is now being organised, with categories for historic buildings, historic detail, and historic scene.
Much of this training took place in the computer suite of the Liskerrett Community Centre to which organisation we are indebted (see www.liskerrett.co.uk)

We are looking into the feasability of training in video production, and of training in any other disciplines which would help ensure the success of the project.

Two guides for children are planned, with teenages leading a group of young people to propose the format and content. The first guide, for age 8 and above, is in the proof stage -It contains information and educational elements, quizzes and puzzles such as wordsearch. The second guide is in progress.
