Prestigious Award for Tamar Valley AONB’s first publication
Location: Cornwall
November 2005
Sovereigns, Madams & Double Whites Fruit & flower pioneers of the Tamar Valley
The Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Service were delighted to receive a Commendation this year for the publication of Sovereigns, Madams and Double Whites, a wonderful book and CD celebrating the market gardening of the area.
The Cornish Gorseth awarded the Holyer an Gof (Cornish, meaning ‘Voice of the Smith’) prize at the Gorseth Kernow Council Awards 2005 Ceremony in Truro earlier this year. Joanna Lewis (author) and Kayleigh Milden (Cornish Audio Visual Archive, who created the accompanying CD of market gardener’s memories) received the award on behalf of the Tamar Valley AONB.
The book received a Commendation in the category ‘Books Over £12’. The Gorseth were most impressed by the beautiful collection of black & white photographs within the book, and the unusual nature of the project; the accompanying CD really brings alive the poignant story of market gardening in the Tamar Valley.
Tim Selman, Manager of the Tamar Valley AONB Service, says; “It’s a great achievement to be awarded this by the Cornish Gorseth, who exist to maintain the national Celtic spirit of Cornwall and honour men and women who have made outstanding contributions to Cornwall, its ancient culture, history and language. The Tamar Valley landscape has been through huge changes during the last century and the AONB has been at the forefront of building understanding and recognition for the area and its people; this book is just one way in which we can achieve just that”.
Sovereigns, Madams & Double Whites, published in May 2004, has been very well received; ‘A delicious book’ (The Cornish Times), ‘A delightful book, of both beauty and integrity’ (Ted Sherrell), ‘A lovely lost world’ (Mavis Batey, Garden History Society) are among the accolades received so far.
Sovereigns, Madams & Double Whites makes the perfect Christmas present. Priced at £18.99, copies are available from The Book Stop (Tavistock), The Book Shelf (Saltash), The Book Shop (Liskeard) and Victoria Book Shop (Bere Alston).
