Refurbishment of War Memorial
Location: Cornwall

This project set out to make local people more aware of the effects of wartime on the built heritage, customs and traditions of the Cornish Parish of St. Keverne, which is bounded by the sea, Goonhilly Downs, Kennack Sands and the Helford River on the Lizard Peninsula.

While the village's war memorial was professionally restored, the local community carried out historical and genealogical investigations through their parish council and British Legion branch, and with help from the local history society.

As Clerk to the Parish Council, Brenda Marsh co-ordinated the project and drafted an information leaflet, which was printed by a local firm. The then Chairman of St Keverne Parish Council, Russell Hocking, is also President of the local British Legion. Grace Hatton, who runs the Lizard Skillcentre, created the website, which was praised by Cornwall Today for being “efficient and user-friendly”.

The printed information leaflet, 'St Keverne Parish - Life During the Two World Wars' is available free (from Helston Tourist Information Centre).
