Lottery Pounds for the Pound

Before work started © Joe Ellison

Saltash Old Cornwall Society
Location: Cornwall

The Pound, which is in the ownership of Saltash Town Council, has allegedly been in use since mediaeval times for housing the stray animals of the Parish; it is now in total disrepair.

The project aims to involve local volunteers in clearing the site and restoring the walls and floor under the tutelage and supervision of a local contractor and with the involvement of the County Archaeologist; volunteers will be offered the opportunity of training in Cornish stone walling.

The local school will help research the history of the feature and the village and an interpretative board will be installed at the site. The pound is in the midst of a popular walking area and local walkers are keen to produce a leaflet highlighting the history of the Pound and raising awareness of it as a focal point of the village.

Local volunteers (incl. the school) will assist with any subsequent maintenance but the Town Council will take overall responsibility for future upkeep.
