Lottery Pounds for the Pound
Location: Cornwall
Work is now almost complete on the regeneration and restoration of Trematon Pound near Saltash, for Saltash Old Cornwall Society. The work has been carried out over the autumn and winter months, with the aid of a grant of £6,776 under the Local Heritage Initiative.
The origins of Trematon Pound are obscure, but along with mythical oyster beds in the river Tamar, the pound has been owned by Saltash Town Council for centuries. It was originally used for impounding animals, either because they had strayed, or because their owners were indebted. In living memory, the local village postman had a small hut within the enclosure, where he used to sort the post.
The Pound was in a sad state of neglect, with broken walls and gate, choked with rank undergrowth. With the aid of many volunteers, under the supervision of stonemason Anthony Elliot and main contractors Brad and Greg Hine, the Pound now looks truly magnificent. Existing stone and mortar (using cow dung water !) was used in the renovation, the original gate was reconstructed and re-welded, and even the original bolt fittings were found in the subsoil and refitted.
Trematon Pound will be the focus for a country walk along adjacent public footpaths, signposted on an information board, which will also tell of the history of this ancient medieval structure. In Spring, the interior will be grassed, and Saltash Town Council will provide an amenity seat for the public to enjoy this peaceful country setting.
