3. Mapping the Walks
Location: Cornwall
With the help of local experts, ten walks have been mapped and outlined on a map of the Parish. All ten have been walked and an initial description produced for each.
A walk “owner” was appointed for each walk with the job of researching the features to be seen and going over the course of the walk a few times to obtain first-hand knowledge of it and to plan illustrations. Each walk owner then produced a detailed walk description of between one to two thousand words.
Thereafter the following sequence has been followed: - The walk owners have their descriptions checked for historical accuracy by the local historian
- At the same time illustrations are selected from a library of photographs and postcards that has been built up over a 30 year period
- The accuracy and clarity of directions are checked by a walk validator, a team member who walks every walk.
The route of the walk is conveyed to the graphic designer who produces a hand-drawn map that shows the route, local features as reference points, the location of toilets, and symbols that tie the text to the map.
