St. Agnes and the Heritage Coast
Location: Cornwall
St Agnes has been blessed by being situated in an incredibly beautiful part of Cornwall’s Heritage Coast. Although it is surrounded by relics of its busy industrial past, these reminders of the frantic search for tin and copper have become part of the fabric of the countryside. With the passage of time, nature has softened most of the scars left by the mining activities.
St Agnes Parish has the best of all worlds; it is an intriguing collection of villages and hamlets with St Agnes village at its centre. It has four beaches and boasts some of the best surf in the country. It is in a beautiful setting that produces an abundance of wild flowers virtually throughout the year. It is rich in wild-life from skylarks to seals. Its mining heritage is second to none and its history and legends are captivating.
Is it any wonder then that the St Agnes Regeneration Forum wants to tell the world about it? Keen as we are, we recognise our limitations. We had already put to one side our grandiose plans to build Community Centres and Heritage Visitor Centres. Now we have decided that we will not tell the world about St Agnes just yet. First we will tell all our neighbours and friends because we have recognised that in this car-using society so many of them have not ventured out on foot to see the wonders on their doorstep.
