Graham Montague - my LHI story
Location: Cornwall
Graham Montague has lived in the moorland hamlet of Temple for fifteen years and is a member of the Temple Association Project, along with his wife Joy.
I have been involved in co-ordinating the two practical outdoor parts of the project, relaying the church path and rebuilding the boundary wall at the entrance to the church.
Having been a pen-pusher all my life, I really enjoyed working outside. What was particularly interesting about working on the path and the wall was discovering that even people who do have relevant skills and expertise don’t always know the answers or get it right first time. They still have to work out the best way of doing a particular job and might need to rethink.
I’d had previous experience of managing and organising people through my job, but it’s different when you’re dealing with people who are giving up their spare time, negotiating with agencies what part they are going to play and when, monitoring progress, and buying in materials on behalf of a voluntary project. The process is similar to when you are doing a paid job but the issues of responsibility, authority and accountability are different in practice.
One of the things we’ve become very aware of is how much time you can have the project on your mind. It’s not simply a question of spending half an hour here or half a day there doing something - it’s all the little in-between bits that really take a lot of time and energy.
As well as being actively involved in the outdoor parts of the project, I helped Joy proof read the book and also took the photographs for the covers of the book. It was very satisfying to see the end result looking so good.
