Temple Association Project
Location: Cornwall
The Temple Association Project was a joint venture by people from the village of Temple on Bodmin Moor and the linked local parishes of Blisland and St Breward. This small community had already worked together on a "living churchyard" project funded by a Rural Action grant, and Temple Church became the focus of their LHI project.
One part of the project involved local people learning the necessary practical skills to re-lay a path, reinstate a handrail, re-hang a gate and rebuild a wall in the churchyard.
The group also brought local history to life by republishing a witty and informative little book about Temple Church's origin, decline and restoration that had been written by the vicar in the 1880s when the church - originally part of a Knights Templar community in the 12th century - was rebuilt.
As well as making interpretative information available in the church, the project has also created a website offering details about the archaeology and natural history of the wider parish, the presence in Cornwall of the Knights Templar, and the role of the village as a place of pilgrimage from different cultures.
