Taking the Initiative, Local Heritage style - An extract from an article about the Temple project published in Saffron Bun, the magazine of Cornwall Rural Community Council (Spring 2004)

Tom Dickin was an A level student planning to read Law at university when he got involved in an LHI (Local Heritage Initiative) project in his home village of Temple on Bodmin Moor.

The LHI group not only pooled their existing talents but also learned new skills enabling them to make practical improvements to Temple Church, and to let both residents and visitors know more about the area’s links with the historic Knights Templar and associated religious pilgrimages.

Some relaid a path and rebuilt a boundary wall. Others organised the republishing of a quirky but informative little book written by the village vicar over 100 years ago. And Tom Dickin designed and created the project’s website.

“I taught myself HTML - the computer language behind designing websites - and developed from there, getting into Javascript and other ways of creating interactive features,” explains Tom. “One of our ideas is to have virtual postcards on the website, so that anyone who visits can send pictures of Temple to their friends by Email.

“It’s obviously a good thing for young people to be involved in projects like this, and to know about their local history and culture,” says Tom. “But it’s also useful to have one of these schemes on your CV when you’re applying for a job, or for university. It shows you’re willing to be involved and can make you stand out and make a good impression.

“It’s been really interesting to sit in on the project meetings when they’re discussing other aspects of the project, and being able to contribute my ideas and opinions. It’s good experience for meetings I might be involved in when I’m older, or if I’m invited to sit on committees.”
