Tom Dickin - my LHI story
Location: Cornwall

Tom Dickin was an A level student planning to read Law at university when he designed a website for the Temple Project.

As well as designing the website for the Temple Association Project, I’ve been giving help and advice about it to Joy and Graham Montague, and my mum Karen Dickin, who’s the Treasurer. They're all computer literate up to a point, and they all went on a course to learn how to design a website, but they found HTML - the computer language behind designing websites - rather complicated.

I taught myself HTML, and developed from there, getting into Javascript and other ways of creating interactive features. One of our ideas is to have virtual postcards on the website, so that anyone who visits can send pictures of Temple to their friends by Email.

It’s been really interesting to sit in on the project meetings when they’re discussing other aspects of the project, like the publishing of the book, and being able to contribute my ideas and opinions. It’s good experience for meetings I might be involved in when I’m older, or if I’m invited to sit on committees.

Working on the Temple website has been useful for me as well as for the community, because it’s been something constructive to put my time into, and it adds to my portfolio of work I’ve done if I want to sell myself as a web designer.

The church is very much the focus of our community, even for people who are not religious, and the vicar was at a project meeting I went to. There’s already a website for the neighbouring parish of Blisland, and the person who designed that has set up a page for the vicar that he can access to post information about his sermons and details of services at the church. We’re going to do that on our website as well.
