"The LHI funding made it possible for Kneehigh to work much more closely with the people and heritage of Hayle than we are usually able to do on our tours.
A few hundred people got involved, from primary school age to over 80, and the amount of time that they put into it was amazing.
We filmed lots of the process, took lots of photographs, and we produced a programme for the production which included details of the outreach work, Everyone who took part was given a copy, and it was also on sale for the audience.
For me personally, it was very new to be involved in funding in the heritage sector, because I’ve always worked in the arts.
Working so closely with a community - the company has worked on community projects before but this was my first experience and it was very different from arranging a tour and going into theatres and established venues.
Heritage and arts can both be pigeon-holed - heritage can be seen as old people’s terrain and not of interest to younger people, and arts can be viewed as quite a privileged activity, that some people think is not for them.
But actually there's a lot of crossover, and a lot of potential for new possibilities. People have become involved in things that they wouldn’t have imagined they would choose to."
