Beating the Bar
Location: Devon

Two of Braunton Museum’s Trustees used to trade out of the tiny port of Velator under sail, navigating the notorious sand bar at the mouth of the Taw and Torridge estuary. Last year one of them, Len Baglole, said “We’ll soon all be gone, the ‘Bar Men’ who sailed in and out of Velator, someone should do something before all that knowledge is lost.”

So we did. we got a grant from the Local Heritage Initiative and interviewed the 13 men left in the village who used to sail from Velator, around the British Isles, the Bristol Channel or as far as the west coast of South America.

We produced a booklet about their life under sail– and how hard they worked. Volunteers also produced a slide show, using old and modern images, which was so popular that a second show is planned. The Beating the Bar project appealed to all ages, and the slide show brought forward more reminiscences from the older people and fascinated the youngsters who hadn’t realised that Braunton had ever has a port!
