70,000 stitches in time for wool festival
Location: Devon
May 2005
The cross-stitch tapestry celebrates one thousand years of wool and leather-working in the town. Local people are being encouraged to play their part by contributing some of the 70,000 stitches needed to finish the project.
Designed by artist Lois Taylor, the tapestry shows local scenes including the River Mardle, the chimney of the old Town Woollen Mill, the launder that brought water to the factories and the Town Hall, which was paid for in part by members of the Hamlyn family, owners of the main woollen mill for many years.
The tapestry is 4 feet 6 inches long and 3 feet high (nearly one and a half metres by one metre) and will require 70,000 stitches to complete. Some stitches in the centre of the tapestry require two people to complete as the canvas is so large. 84 hours of work have already gone into the tapestry.
The tapestry, along with other heritage elements of the festival, has been funded by the Local Heritage Initiative.
Tapestry volunteer Jill Elliott said: “This is a stunning artwork and a wonderful opportunity for the whole community to take part in the festival. I would like every person in the town to contribute at least one stitch. After the festival the tapestry will become a community heirloom.”
The tapestry is on display in Woodholme House in the centre of Buckfastleigh. To see it and to join in, contact Jill Elliott on (01364) 642851 or Anne Kenyon on (01364) 642503.
Buckfastleigh Wool & Leather Festival takes place in July.
