Hope Archive Group
Location: Devon
The Hope Archive Group is in the midst of a project to produce a history of the parish of South Huish in South Devon. The story will begin in the first millennium BC and continue in outline until the invention of the camera in the mid 1880’s. Thereafter, the visual record and comment upon it will complete the portrayal up to the beginning of the third millennium AD.
This will be achieved by drawing on the experience of group members and to involve the community through information gathering exercises including a questionnaire which will delivered to all local households.
Also, regular public presentations will be held at the local village hall and annual exhibitions in the Fishermen’s Reading Room. The outputs from the project, including a book, will increase archive material and it is hoped will form the basis for a further phase, producing subject-specific publications and practices in the local area.
The book has now been published. It runs to 150 pages and contains many photographs, both ancient and modern to illustrate the text. All photographs have been either donated by locals, or have given permission to scan copies, and are now included in the Archives. Maybe the best way of illustrating the contents is to list the Chapter headings.
