Starting the Project
Location: Devon
Last summer some members of the Torquay Natural History Society got together to decide how local memories could be saved for posterity. Quickly the priorities became apparent, collect memories of significant events and preserve them in an archive that would be of enduring value to the community.
Many of us had no relevant experience, but we were very lucky because one of those attending our first meeting was Alan Heather who has a lifetime of experience of recording sound. He began recording a varied collection of memories on our behalf, but it quickly became apparent that it was too much work for one person. Many people we talked to remembered the war years and so a focus developed. We realised that to tell this story we would need to gather more skills and invest in more equipment, hence the application for funding from the LHI and Nationwide Building Society. By March 2004 it was full steam ahead. We all started to share in the recording and archiving work and the museum helped by assembling the elements of our exhibition. “June 1944, Torbay at War” will remain open at the museum throughout the summer, after which it will tour around the Bay. It contains both pictures and oral accounts of those extraordinary war years.
