Parracombe and the Heddon Valley: An Unfinished History
Location: Devon
The project is in 2 parts beginning with a re-enactment on one of England’s finest motte and bailey castles (according to the County Archaeologist) and leading to a major exhibition in 2006. The re-enactment held in co-operation with Exmoor NPA is a response to the community’s desire to find out more about their local heritage.
As the castle is the village’s major focal point but is in private ownership, this event is a once in a lifetime opportunity to find out more about its importance to Parracombe and the surrounding district. It will give an insight into how the castle and village developed and what life was like in Parracombe at that time.
Targeted research on the era will be developed into an informative pamphlet and will be followed by workshops in which local people will trace both their family and their houses’ roots. Having filled in some gaps in the village’s history an exhibition will be held in 2006.
A permanent interpretation board relating to the castle will also be erected at the nearby church overlooking the site. Key events will be filmed by local media arts students to provide a permanent record of the project.
