Having established our virtual tour site and our web site, work has now begun on the restoration of No. 2 gunfloor. We have received permission from the Secretary of State, allowing us to make a start on the necessary works.
Our engineer had to find 'antique steel' to replace the corroded RSJ's. The anti-straff plates are being sandblasted whilst the asphalt roof covering is relaid. Any replacement material must be of a type, texture and colour which matches the original. All work must be photographed before, during and on completion. Landscaping of the site continues with group members helping to clear unwanted scrub and plant hedging.
The gunfloor restoration will be followed by the erection of interpretation boards on each emplacement. Group members have recently visited the Imperial War Museum, London and the Cobbaton Combat Collection, Devon, researching weapons, recorded incidents and photographs related to our battery site.
Phase 2 funding
With the restoration of the gunfloor anti-strafing hood complete, we have now moved onto our latest projects. These are:
- "Brixham At War" - a play about the lives of a local Brixham family during the Second World War.
This play was written by David Murphy and directed by John Fabian, who had experience on the series Howard's way and also a series about the Special Operations Executive (SOE) - the British clandestine executive set up during WW2 to carry out covert missions against the enemy.
- "Between The Lines" - this short film follows the story of four British soldiers from the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry. While on patrol, a German ambush on the British section leaves them disorientated and short of supplies. They have to withdraw from enemy lines and find their way back to their company. With German patrols holding their advance, they are stuck between the lines.
This film was written by David Murphy is being directed by Ashley Wing, a local director. It is being filmed locally and when complete will be screened around local schools and shall also be submitted to film festivals.
