Shobrooke - Heart of Cob Country
Location: Devon

The Devon village of Shobrooke is in the heart of "cob country", and its churchyard wall is recognised as a very fine example of the cob craft - built with a well-judged mixture of soil, water and straw.

Necessary repairs to this wall were undertaken as part of a project which enabled local people not only to find out more about the tradition of cob building and its impact on the character of the area, but also to have hands-on experience of doing it themselves under expert supervision.

The repairs had to be done by a professional contractor, but the project provided the community with a variety of opportunities to take an interest, including talks by visiting experts in the village hall, cob building demonstrations, and an informative leaflet distributed to all homes in the parish.
