Shobrooke's New Wall: Community Cob - Extract from an article about the Shobrooke project published in Village Green, the quarterly magazine of the Community Council of Devon (issue 93, September 2003)

Peter Spencer of Shobrooke Parochial Church Council discovered the LHI scheme when he wanted to restore the ancient cob wall around the village churchyard. But to qualify for an LHI grant, communities must come together to explore and celebrate what’s special in their local area - not just to restore particular features.

Devon County Council’s Historic Buildings Advisor was able to suggest ways to make the repairs to Shobrooke’s wall part of a wider community project, with experts visiting to explain the history and procedures, plus practical demonstrations.

“Although the people in the village were familiar with cob buildings, most of them had never seen any cob actually being made,” explains Mr Spencer. “People were invited to turn up at any time during the day wearing their filthiest old clothes and welly boots to join in trampling on the cob and stamping it down and making mud bricks and all sorts of interesting things.”
