Location: Devon

To raise awareness of Teignmouth’s maritime heritage through research which will be presented at the Teignmouth Folk Festival in a variety of interpretative ways.

The project is linked to SeaBritain 2005, a yearlong festival of events exploring maritime heritage organised by the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory and visitBritain Local people will be directly involved in doing the research and creating a massed dance.

Local fisherman and the river pilot will give talks, run guided walks and produce a trail leaflet. They shall also record their memories and family history, undertake storytelling workshops, produce and perform a play. Other outputs will be concerts and an exhibition which will later be housed in the local museum.

Topics such as;
  • fisher families who moved to Newfoundland
  • the local ship building industry
  • historic links with granite quarrying on Dartmoor
  • the sacking of the town in 1690
  • the Viking invasions of 1001 BC
are just a few of the ones to be investigated.
