The Dartmouth Archive, the project so far.

We are now at the half way point in our archive project, the more demanding & difficult work of designing & setting it up so that it is easy to maintain & grow while being user friendly has been interesting to say the least.

Entering material has progressed steadily & the “Archive” now contains enough information for a Version 1, to be produced which we have put on to the computers in the Dartmouth library IT section. Access is unfortunately only available at present via Windows Explorer. We have asked the County Council to provide a Desktop link which at present they are reluctant to do, to use their words “It is not corporate policy”, discussions are continuing as we believe this is essential if it is to be available to all.

Amongst the items currently available are most of the burial records for the town, 1861 & 1891census for the town & some villages, all our “out of print” publications, Index’s to over 1500 family documents with many of them available as images, early recordings of interviews with towns people who are no longer alive, several papers on the harbour activities including shipbuilding, fishing & Dartmouth’s links with Newfoundland.

Encouraged by the success of the project so far we are looking into bring forward future plans for the creation of a internet site, this will need to be a database driven site with keyword search facilities. Early indications are promising & we believe this can be funded from savings made from within our existing grant, subject to LHI agreement.
