About the Throwleigh Archive Project
Location: Devon

The idea for an exhibition of photographs was first discussed in 2000 and as plans developed , the possibility of a grant from the LHI became a reality. The project in its current form started to take shape in March 2001.

A lot of information gathering was required, and after a very encouraging start progress became severely impeded by the foot and mouth disease restrictions in 2001.

The villagers of Throwleigh gathered outside the parish church © Chris ChapmanEventually an exhibition of what had been gathered so far was held in the village hall in April 2002. There were many display boards of photographs and copies of old documents as well as recordings of people describing life and events in Throwleigh. The exhibition was very well attended with over 700 people attending (the population of the parish is less than 300) and as hoped, this led to several more people coming forward with further historical evidence and memories.

Since 2002, many informal interviews have taken place, and more people have been recorded as they recall their memories of Throwleigh. A laptop computer has enabled the archive of many hundreds of scanned photographs to be shown to people. It has proved to be a great aid as the images encourage more reminiscences when faces, places and events are recognised.

In April 2006 a second exhibition was held and all the available material was available for public viewing, some as printed displays, and a lot more on the laptop computer. A hardback book was also available for sale and copies are available from the Throwleigh Archive.
