Chardstock - doing the project
Location: Devon

Chardstock is fortunate in having had a very detailed History of the Parish written and published in 1999 by two local historians, and so much is known about its early history.

We realised however that much modern history was being lost as the older generations died out and not only were their memories being lost, but their accumulated photographs etc were being thrown out as being of no interest. It was in an effort to prevent this happening that the project was conceived.

The object is two-fold: to gather all available information, and make it available to future generations both in the Parish and outside in the form of an archive, and to publish selected extracts of both transcripts and photographs in book form.

The project is divided into sections, each with its own coordinator (or coordinators) – e.g. recordings, data-base, publication etc. Meetings are held between the coordinators every 4 – 6 weeks to check on progress, discuss problems etc. These are held in the local pub, which seems to improve on attendance!

For the recordings we are using the Sony minidisk system. This is convenient in that the equipment is small as are the disks, and they actually hold more than a standard CD (if used in mono mode). However the equipment is so small that some users have found difficulty with using the buttons on the recorder, particularly those with arthritic fingers. The equipment also does not lend itself to transcription as it does not have a “pause” button. We are currently transposing a copy of the recordings onto CD for transcription, but this is not straightforward, and is time consuming. 2 further copies of each recording are made and stored separately.
