February 2005
Location: Devon
Over the past few months our software engineer has been tweaking the House Scouts database and making some improvements. This has meant that we have been unable to enter much information on to the database, but time has not been wasted as we have spent it scanning photographs and documents into the holding file.
When we put the heritage and culture slide show together for the Parish Plan exhibition day, we discovered that we had now got nearly a thousand images on the computer, not bad really, for under a year! This has only been possible; thanks to the people of Winkleigh who have generously let us scan their photographs and documents.
I am really pleased with the way the project is going, there is so much else going on in the village, it is a wonder that any of us including the volunteers have the time. Our volunteers even managed to finish scanning on all of the ACE Airfield survey photograph, which was no mean feat as there were an awful lot of them.
In January Gordon Fisher and I managed to finish surveying the Kings Arms, well mostly, we have got to go back to finish drawing the details of roof timbers and take a few more photographs. After that we will get the drawings onto the computer and start tying in the documentary work. All of this work will be on display at the Kings Arms on the 14th of May, when the well/ adit in the dinning room is to be explored (the water having been pumped out first!) again by Winkleigh’s intrepid Pot holing team.
Maybe this time we will really be able to work out what the hole was used for, so come along to the Kings Arms from 12.00 noon onwards, to find out. Meanwhile we are setting up some survey training sessions for a group of volunteers, so that we can start surveying some more houses.
David Purnell is still working in the West Country Studies Centre and Records Office, looking up information on buildings that House Scouts are working on as well as continuing on with the Winkleigh Census, he is happy to help folks in the Study Centre and Records Office if required.
We are on the look out for photographs or anything that relates to “before” things happened, for instance; Croft Castle before the Village Hall was built, Winkleigh Moor before the Airfield or any of its associated sites and roads, anything really, we would be most grateful.
The Community Kiosk with our computer is up and running in the Community Centre every Tuesday evening in the small room, from 8.00 pm till 10.00 pm and at the mini market every Wednesday morning. So do come along to view the database and bring any photographs, news paper cuttings or anything about Winkleigh that you would like us to scan, you are also most welcome to join our bunch of volunteers and find out more about the history of where you live. Please phone first for the first Tuesday of the month because it is live music night and all our volunteers might be over the road in the Village Hall!
