Winkleigh House Detectives
Location: Devon

The aim of the project is to raise awareness of the built heritage of the parish of Winkleigh among local people of all ages by enabling them to find out for themselves the history of their house and its place in the physical and social landscape of the area.

Information produced will be collated and made available to the wider local population through a public computer facility within the village. The intention is that the project will also forge links with other groups and the process of discovery for individual householders will lead to more sympathetic restoration and other heritage issues and create spin off benefits for local craftspeople.

This project is for anyone who is interested in the history of where they live in the parish of Winkleigh. It is not necessary to live in an old house to join the project, because of Winkleigh’s rich heritage the land on which new dwellings are built are places of interest.

The project will be IT based and for those who hate computers a paper version could be made available. We are aiming towards a really easy to use proforma that can be added to over time. It will include documentary evidence, such as census, maps and deeds etc, plans, drawings and photographs of the buildings and its residents.

The information gathered would gradually build up a wonderful picture of how Winkleigh and the surrounding area grew over the centuries. Once developed it is intended that the project will be made available to any individual or group outside Winkleigh wishing to study his or her own area.

Training in all aspects of the project will be provided, from how to use the Records Office, to surveying, planning and drawing, IT and conservator skills.

The project was the brainchild of The Winkleigh Society and ACE Archaeology Club. With the help and support from North Devon Archaeology Society and North Devon Museum, we have been able to expand the original idea of a small, stand alone, database project to one that will dovetail into a larger existing one, North Devon On Disc, thus making it more accessible to a wider audience. The advantages of our project joining North Devon On Disc are that it opens up many more avenues of interest for people to pursue. To complement our project and help us to look after a growing archive, we have been invited to take part in a pilot scheme for rural archives, the Community Kiosk.
