Location: Devon
The 27th of February was a lovely frosty day, the sun shone and the roads were lethal! That did not stop Benny Venn and Gordon Fisher getting to Merton (via everywhere!) to help collect the Community Kiosk and bring the two units over to Winkleigh for the Grand Launch in the Village Hall. That left me all on my own to set up the exhibition and paraphernalia, not one House Scouts volunteer or ACE member turned up to help which was very disappointing.
Despite the shaky start, the day was a huge success, the hall looked fantastic and was stuffed with not only the three projects launching that day but also other associated Winkleigh and Tarka Millennium projects. I have no idea how many people came through that day but the hall saw a continuous flow of people, many of whom showed a great deal of interest in our House Scouts project.
We all enjoyed the wonderful refreshments provided by Fiona’s Fare, efficiently served by the Winkleigh Societies intrepid team of serving wenches! Lots of useful contacts were made, most of which I have entirely failed to talk to since that day, sorry folks, we have not forgotten you.
Some of our volunteers have got stuck in to researching their own houses, we have also started to survey the King’s Arms and information about all aspects of Winkleigh ‘s history has started to come in. ACE member David Purnell has spent a lot of time in the records office unravelling the eccentricities of all of the Winkleigh Censuses, the early ones have different street names and only the “big” houses are mentioned by name, making it very difficult to work out who lived where. We are hoping to put all of David’s work onto the computer in a map form, so anyone will be able to see who lived in his or her house from 1841 to 1901.
There is still so much to do organizing admin and the running of the project itself, from working out a numbering/ filing system of the photographs to getting to grips with our database’s possibilities (there are over 300 pages to the manual), let alone a lovely annotation program to mess about with for our maps (any computer wiz kids out there?).
The Community Kiosk with our computer is up and running in the Community Centre every Tuesday evening in the small room, from 8.00 pm till 10.00 pm and at the mini market every Wednesday morning. So do come along, weather you want to join our bunch of volunteers, or just have a look at what we are up to, everyone is most welcome.
Please phone first for the first Tuesday of the month because it is live music night and all our volunteers might be over the road in the Village Hall! Also please note that during August the kiosk will be closed for business, as Gordon and I will be away digging on Dartmoor.
