Location: Devon
House Scouts has only nine months left to complete the development of the project, so far I think that we have done very well, having stuck to our original proposal we have achieved all our intended aims in varying degrees.
Word has got out about what we are doing as we have had many enquiries from groups wanting to set up similar projects, including Cerne Abbas who we recently heard have been awarded LHI funding.
There are 15 buildings on the books in various stages of completion, The Alms House and Church House have now been surveyed and the drawings are waiting to go on to the computer. On the 14th of May it was ‘Shaft Day’ in the Kings Arms where we were able to show off our work on the pub so far, in the form of a small exhibition.
Thanks to Julia and Chris who had the shaft in the dining room pumped out and not forgetting the mad pot-holers; Gareth and Bob who went down and measured it for us, we were able to draw a section and plan of the shaft to add to the other plans of the building. Croft is the next house to receive the surveyors attention but more about that later in the next Distinctly Winkleigh.
We intend to add Roy Cooper’s photographic collection of all dwellings in Winkleigh to the House Scouts Collection; these were taken for the Winkleigh book project. David Purnell continues to root about in the Records Office for information on the houses that we are ‘scouting’ and is continuingly coming up with snippets of information on other buildings, which we will be able to add to the photos from Roy’s collection.
Unfortunately the school part of the project has stalled, the software put onto the schools computer got wiped and no one from the museum has been out to re-install it yet.
Photographs, documents and other information continues to be brought in for scanning at the Mini Market on Wednesday mornings, we are building up a huge archive for Winkleigh thanks to all the folk who have contributed. At this years Winkleigh Fair cream tea on the 10th of July (I think?) there will be another exhibition of past Fairs, now we have got too many photograph to fit on the exhibition boards, so we will have a slide show running on the computer at the same time!
We are still on the look out for photographs or anything that relates to “before” things happened, for instance; Croft Castle before the Village Hall was built, Winkleigh Moor before the Airfield or any of its associated sites and roads, anything really, we would be most grateful.
The Community Kiosk with our computer is up and running in the Community Centre every Tuesday evening in the small room, from 8.00 pm till 10.00 pm and at the mini market every Wednesday morning. So do come along to view the database and bring any photographs, newspaper cuttings or anything about Winkleigh that you would like us to scan, you are also most welcome to join our bunch of volunteers and find out more about the history of where you live. Please note that we close down for August.
