Location: Devon

In October I gave a talk to the Torrington Historical Society about ACE’s survey of the Airfield and also about House Scouts, which was very well received. Then later in the month ACE and House Scouts put on an exhibition for the history day in South Molton, the event was organized by the North Devon Archaeological Society was a great success. There were displays from many other small clubs and societies from all over North Devon.

The day was filled with short talks by the local antiquities scheme, the Records Office and various groups, there was also plenty of time to chat, or network as they call it these days. A great deal of interest was shown in House Scouts as well as ACE’s experimental archaeology and the Teigncombe dig, so all in all it was a good showcase for us.

Over the past few months, ACE member David Purnell, has been working in the West Country Studies Centre and Records Office, looking up information on some of the buildings that House Scouts are working on as well as continuing on with the Winkleigh Census, David is happy to help folks in the Study Centre and Records Office if required.

This autumn, we at last managed to get back to the Kings Arms and finish surveying the ground floor; we even got started on the second. It has turned out to be a very interesting building; hopefully soon there will be a display in the Kings Arms as well as on the computer of work in progress.

Betty Heggadon has kindly allowed us to scan her copies of the Daily Sketch covering the competition offering the Ring o’ Bells (burnt down in the 1960’s and is now the area of grass by the west gate of the church) as the prize in 1956, so they will be entered onto the database as soon as possible. Some of our HS volunteers have been scanning the photographs that were taken in 1999 by ACE for the building survey of Winkleigh Airfield and its associated sites. This collection will be added to the database and turned into a presentation.

The Community Kiosk with our computer is up and running in the Community Centre every Tuesday evening in the small room, from 8.00 pm till 10.00 pm and at the mini market every Wednesday morning. So do come along to view the database and bring any photographs, news paper cuttings or anything about Winkleigh that you would like us to scan, you are also most welcome to join our bunch of volunteers and find out more about the history of where you live. Please phone first for the first Tuesday of the month because it is live music night and all our volunteers might be over the road in the Village Hall!

As if the above activities are not enough to keep us out of mischief this autumn, ACE has managed to fit in three sessions at the roundhouse at Yeoford, where we have been making shingles for the roof. This is done by riving the timber into slices then trimming to size, this all of course takes ages but no one seems to mind.

To compliment our work at Teigncombe we have started to survey some of the other roundhouses and reaves in the Kestor settlement, we are using a plane table to plot in every stone, at a scale of 1: 50 so we should end up with a very detailed drawing. The first day that we had arranged to do this, Dartmoor was shrouded in fog so we chose a roundhouse that was only a few metres from the road, fortunately the next time we went it was clear.

We plan to do some more surveying session before Christmas both indoors for House Scouts and outdoors with ACE at Kestor. It all takes ages but none of us seem to mind!
