The Winkleigh Society and ACE Archaeology club are delighted that the money for North Devon On Disc and the Winkleigh House Detectives project has been granted. Since the announcement of our successful bid, we have been busy organizing the project, the NDOD database is being adjusted for Winkleigh and the Winkleigh House Detectives node is being written for us. Meanwhile we have been sorting out the community Kiosk, the IT hardware to go in it, and the surveying equipment that needs to be purchased, we are also arranging the training days with our experts.

One of the most important things to get organized are the volunteers, we need lots of people to help, from making tea to surveying buildings, we need YOU! There are many different aspects to this project and we need help on all levels, do not worry if you have no experience, as training will be provided.

To study the history of a house and who lived there not only do you have to root around in the Records Office looking for documentary evidence, but also the fabric of the building itself must be recorded, a floor plan can tell a fascinating story of the how the building has developed over the years.

Having gathered all this information and put it onto our North Devon On Disc computer we will be able to build a picture of how Winkleigh has developed over the years. Alongside the computer there will be a display case/ archive, where we can carefully store and show off some of Winkleigh’s documents and artefacts.

The North Devon On Disc project is not just for the history buffs, it is for everyone, the map-based image database (with sound and video) can be used to record projects and events throughout the year. Any individuals, clubs or societies in the area can create a presentation, by using the story-based template, there is even an element designed for primary school use.

Newsletter Article July 03 (Distinctly Winkleigh)

Goodbye House Detectives, hello House Scouts! Do not worry it’s the same project just with a new name. We thought that the BBC might get a little upset if we carried on calling our project House Detectives, so House Scouts it is.

Over the past few months all of the surveying and drawing equipment has been purchased, with the exception of the digital camera but the wheels are in motion and soon we will have one. The computer, loaded with North Devon On Disc and all of the hardware that we need for the project should be in Winkleigh by the time you are reading this, so all we need now is the Community Kiosk to put it and our already growing archive in.

In June and July some training sessions in surveying, drawing and documentary work were held, these were not only great fun but I think those that attended learnt a lot, I for one will never be able to look at a building in the same way again.

The results of the three houses that we used for the training sessions will help to build the database for the project, it is taking quite a while but we want to get it right.
