STREAM SURVEY at Broadwindsor SchoolPress cutting of Broadwindsor pupils stream survey

The original day in the middle of March had to be re-arranged as it was snowing and too cold for stream dipping. Instead it was run a few weeks later, on Wednesday 31st March.

At 9am the class was split into two one hour sessions. This was for Health & Safety reasons; each half doing a one-hour session on the stream.

When studying the stream each group was split into two; one doing the stream dipping and water quality, the other making a start on the physical description of the site.

The stream dipping went well, with some good water quality indicator species being found. On the whole, using a simple technique, the water quality was found to be of excellent quality. Hopefully, the class may put together some information comparing the animals found in each session. This will particularly highlight the seasonal changes in their environment. Again, the animals found in the water indicated very good water quality.

The physical studies of the river looked at things such as water temperature, depth, width. It also looked at the bankside for things such as rubbish, tree species and bankside vegetation. The latter in particular will change as the season commences.

The final monitoring session will take place on the morning of Thursday 8th July. The pupils will then have three sets of data collected in different seasons.
