The Village Archive Project
Location: Dorset

In order to acquire the skills necessary to produce a CD a group of 9 village volunteers attended a 3-day multimedia course at PVA MediaLabs in Bridport.

Norman Marsden describes the technology training.

My part of the project is to lead the production of an archive of photographic, movie (film & video), audio and written material. The archive is to be made available on interactive CD-ROM which will run on PC.

In order to acquire the skills necessary to produce an interactive CD-ROM a group of village volunteers attended a 3-day multimedia course at PVA Media Labs in Bridport from 4th-6th June inclusive. This course was not a computer course but offered training in presentation and media skills using the computer. Only basic computer skills were required, although some of the group were technologically literate with advanced levels of programming knowledge.

Day 1: Introduced participants to project work. Real world projects were examined, the technologies explained and the planning issues of our specific project explored. The day included hands-on experience with Flash animation software and introduced us to Macromedia Director software – a very versatile programme which is based on theatrical production principles.

Day 2: A hands-on day. We used Pro-Tools audio software and had experience of digital audio and video editing, as well as continuing to work with Macromedia Director. These tools were explained by artist facilitator, Simon Poulter, in a simple, patient, straightforward fashion.

Day 3: The day was set aside as an opportunity to play with the technologies, resolve technical problems and receive advice on delivery of our project. Different participants picked up different aspects of our project and focussed on the skills required, e.g.: designing ‘buttons’, transferring and editing sound, scanning images, etc.

The course proved remarkably valuable. All the participants, at different levels, found it challenging but very worthwhile. Those in the group who began with very limited computer skills said how much their confidence had grown. And one of the group has been convinced that she needs to work in the multi-media arts world and not be a waitress!

Over the weeks since the course members of the group have continued to visit PVA, usually on Friday afternoons, to practice and develop their newly acquired skills by working on a trial CD-ROM. (See elsewhere for material evidence.) We are hoping to complete this trial during August. The skills developed will then be used over the run of the Building Bridges project and beyond.
