Cerne Abbas First School Heritage Project
Location: Dorset

The village school is believed to be the oldest in Dorset. It is about to move to replacement buildings on a new site in the village. The project therefore plans to create an archive of material relating to the history of the school and a permanent exhibition to be installed at the new site.

The exhibition will include:
  • An oral history,
  • An archive of photographs and documents, which will include a survey of the present buildings recording the development since the 1840’s
  • A photographic portrait of staff and pupils
  • Materials and documents will be collated which will place the new buildings within their historical and geographical context within the village.
  • A project by the current pupils in the form of a diary will record ‘A week in the life of Cerne Abbas School’
  • A teaching resource in the form of a CD ROM and web-based materials will be produced.
