Archaeology Report
Location: Dorset

Through the grant given by the LHI QPIPS employed Bournemouth University to produce a desk based assessment and report on Queens Park. It has been realised that the park contains some of the last remaining visible evidence of ancient land use in Bournemouth.

It is a common misconception that Bournemouth only developed during the early 19th Century, however findings suggest that Queens Park was used for agricultural purposes from around 1066.

For the full report please refer to the pdf.

A further project has been carried out to record the oral history of Queens Park during the last 16 months 19 people were interviewed and their memories recorded. Memories extended back to eighty years, and so much has been learnt about Queens Park and the surrounding area.

It has been a very successful project and so much has been learnt, about changing pastimes, flora and fauna.

An archive has been created dating back to the 1930's showing people using the park, and the oldest picture of the green keepers of the park in their full uniform.

Both the oral history and archive is instrumental in creating a lasting document of peoples memories that can be looked back on in years to come, when things will have changed so much.
