History Day
Location: Dorset

On Sunday 14th May a history day was held in Queens Park, to celebrate the closure of the LHI project. It was based on what had been learnt through the project and re-created a traditional Sunday afternoon on the park.

During the Oral History interviews it was learnt that the Salvation Army used to play by the pond on a Sunday afternoon so we invited the band to play for us again.

Model boating used to be a favourite past time so the Grafter club offered to come and sail some of their boats on the pond, which made a lovely display.

The archaeology report showed that the track that runs along by the pond was called Longmans Bottom and was an old drovers road where the cattle would have been bought on to the heath in the Spring to graze. We had a mini landtrain come and take passengers on a ride down this track.

The park was given to the people in 1905 and therefore the basis of the theme was Victorian, Victorian costumes were available to try on, and traditional games were borrowed from Scapalens Court Museum in Poole.

The majority of the oral history interviewees attended the event, which was opened my the Mayor of Bournemouth and were presented the publication my the mayor, and then given a free glass of champagne. It gave everyone a chance to meet new people and talk about their memories of the park.

About 200 people turned up for the event, and it was a very fun and informative day.
